I’ve always had a soft spot for Norwich market. I picked up a lovely carrier bag holder there once in the shape of a cat – I still have it on my kitchen wall; and even though I have no military skills a trip to Norwich isn’t complete without a visit to the market’s army surplus store – ‘I’d be no good in a war, but I do like an army surplus store’ – one day I’m going to purchase one of their ghillies (a camouflage suit that looks like a bush for anyone unfamiliar with the fashion).

But there’s now another reason to make for the market – Bia Kitchen – the vegan diner http://www.biakitchen.co.uk/

George Monbiot recently wrote about his conversion to a 97% Vegan diet.

‘… its not hard to see how gently we could tread if we stopped keeping animals. Rain forests, savannahs, wetlands, magnificent wildlife can live alongside us, but not alongside our current diet.’

I think we all know that treading gently is a matter of extreme urgency if we want to leave any sort of habitable planet to future generations, but all too often we succumb to the instant gratifications of a corrupted, unhealthy, poisonous food system and shut out of our minds the impact this is having on the planet.

And on us.

So when an opportunity arises to eat in a healthy, environmentally friendly way we should grab it!

I’ll be grabbing everything I can get my hands on at the Vegan Diner!

So far I’ve sampled the breakfast bap (scrambled tofu and vegetarian sausage), the pulled jack fruit bap with smoky red cabbage (Jack fruit is a tropical fruit with an almost meaty texture), and the spicy bean burrito. Plus several portions of beer battered cauliflower bites. I know that’s a lot of food to eat in one day, but it was all delicious.

Founders Cheryl and Michelle aim to ‘make delicious and honest food that’s kinder to the planet’. It’s an approach we should all be taking.

I’m hoping that a week will be enough time to work through the rest of the menu.

So see you at the Vegan Diner. I’ll be easy to spot. I’ll be the guy in the ghillie!
