My name is Ian Wheatstone. I work as a theatre Company and Stage Manager – usually on touring productions.
While touring on Mathew Bourne’s Swan Lake earlier in the year I stumbled on a place in Southampton called Chalk Valley. It looked like an upmarket burger bar, but on closer inspection I noticed it had quite an amazing selling point. All the food was organic, locally sourced and the meat was all from grass fed animals.
I ate there later that evening then enthusiastically emailed the rest of the Company to encourage them to do the same.
As the week drew to a close I decided to try and find somewhere equally as good at our next stop, Belfast – somewhere that matched at least some of the values of Chalk Valley – somewhere healthy, organic, local, sustainable. And of course tasty.
The pick was Made in Belfast. Again after trying it out I emailed my recommendation to everyone and was rewarded with quite a few of the Company trying it out. It was suggested that maybe I should even start a blog. The two possible names put forward were ‘Ian’s guide to sustainable and healthy organic food that is also ethical and can help save the planet’ and ‘The Wheatstone Eat Zone’.
I went with the second.
Hopefully the Eat Zone will help answer one of the first questions asked in a new place:
‘Where’s good to eat?’
